A Guide To Importing From The USA
(A)
The cost to ship a vehicle to the UK depends on vehicle size and method. For example to ship out of Miami Florida using a container would cost in the region of 800 US Dollars. To ship from Jacksonville Florida using a RoRo (Roll on Roll off) ferry would depend on length of vehicle, you should expect to pay in the region of 1600 US Dollars for an average length Truck or Car.
If you use a reputable shipper they will be able to handle the US export paper work for you. The shipper will also be able to handle the UK import paper work. The answer here is use an established shipper and let them deal with all the import export documentation for you.
(B)
The cost on arrival in the UK will depend on what type of vehicle you have, and whether you are importing / exporting as a private individual or dealer. VAT (Value Added Tax) will paid on all vehicles at a rate of 17.5% (VAT can in some cases be deferred or offset if you have your own business in the UK). You will also have to pay Duty (Import Duty Tax) this is based on vehicle classification i.e. a Truck (F150, RAM2500 Etc) would require Duty payment of 22%. Cars would be rated at 10%. As a rough guide the cost will be shipping + 17.5% VAT + 10 or 22 % Duty + any loading/unloading fees
(C)
To get a UK Title/Registration certain rules will apply i.e. is vehicle less than three years old. All American vehicles must be taken to a ministry SVA testing centre. An SVA (Single Vehicle Approval) test involves checking things like tires, seat belts, glass, lights, turn signals etc for conformity to European standards. Once you have been issued an SVA Certificate and the vehicle is less than three years old you can apply for the vehicle to be registered/titled. If the vehicle is more than three years old it will also need an MOT test which is similar to the SVA but based more on the road worthiness of the vehicle. Cost for this will vary from vehicle to vehicle and be based on alterations needed to pass the UK MOT and/or SVA. For example tyres, headlights and rear lights may need changing to comply with UK/European regulations. Expect costs in the region of £500 sterling
So estimated costs will be A+B+C
